What is Naturopathic medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of medicine for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human disease and impairment. It stresses health maintenance, disease prevention, patient education, and patient responsibilities, and emphasizes the treatment of the whole person rather than just treating the disease. Naturopathic doctors help to remove the obstacles to cure and employ natural therapies that strengthen and stimulate each person’s own healing processes. Naturopathic training and approach to treatment is a specialty in the field of medicine. All licensed naturopathic doctors are trained to diagnose and manage acute and chronic medical conditions. The treatment is always unique to the individual, and may include botanical medicine, homeopathy, nutrition, lifestyle counseling, drainage, hydrotherapy, minor surgery, IV, pharmaceutical prescription and other tools.
Although Dr Danz was trained to offer minor surgery, pharmaceutical prescriptive management and IV therapy, the current Alaska license does not allow any Naturopathic doctors to provide these essential services. The Alaska Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AKANP) is actively working to change this licensing in the legislature, and we look forward to expanding the scope of naturopthic doctors in Alaska to include their formal training and support their primary care provider role.
